Meet The News Team
Claire Millar
I have worked on the Citybeat News Team since November 2008 – starting off as a Broadcast Journalist – and now I’ve been appointed Deputy News Editor.
I graduated from the University of Ulster in 2006 with a BA (Hons) Media Studies degree and went on to study an MA in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University – where I was the only student to graduate with a Distinction in 2008.
In the last 3 years – I have covered some of the biggest news stories here – including the murder of two soldiers at Massereene Barracks in Antrim, various elections, the marathon Hillsborough talks which led to the Devolution of Policing & Justice Powers, the Hazel Stewart murder trial and the murders of PSNI Constables Stephen Carroll and Ronan Kerr.
In April 2011 – I had the opportunity to travel to London to send live reports from the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, and in May 2011, I spent 2 days in Dublin – covering the historic visit of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Ireland.
I was the only broadcast finalist in the Newcomer Category at the 2011 Northern Ireland Media Awards.
David Morgan
I joined Citybeat in March last year as Senior Broadcast Journalist and was appointed to the post of News Editor in June 2011.
My career began back in 1981 with the Irish News in Belfast. After three years I began freelance work for a number of newspapers, both Sunday and dailies in the city and writing news bulletins for UTV.
In 1987, I started working for the BBC in Belfast as a Regional Journalist. For the next fourteen years I both produced and broadcast news and current affairs across many platforms and strands in Broadcasting House, covering some of the biggest stories to break here.
These included the Enniskillen bomb, Michael Stone’s attack at Milltown, and the devloping political story.
In 2001, I then moved to UTV initially writing and producing television news bulletins before returning to a position as a news reporter.
In my spare time – I enjoy reading and am a very keen cook!
Letitia Fitzpatrick
I have been working as a Freelance journalist with Citybeat since the beginning of 2011.
In the past – I have worked as a journalist for the Irish News, the Irish Times, BBC radio and television, locally and nationally, UTV.
I was runner-up twice in the Institute of Public Relations Broadcast Journalist of the Year award.
During my career – I have covered many major stories including the murder of Mary Travers, the aftermath of the Shankill and Omagh bombings, President Clinton’s visit, the Good Friday Agreement, Drumcree and the Rosemary Nelson Inquiry.
Tony Rice
After deciding to have a mid-life crisis – some would say nearer to end-of-life crisis – I left behind 26 years in the IT industry and took on a Masters in Journalism in the University of Ulster in 2008.
Since completing the course in 2009, I have been lucky enough to be working for Citybeat in a part-time capacity and now am a full-time journalist with the company. I have also worked for the Q Network, based in Ballymena.
So far in my career, I have covered, among others the funeral of Cardinal Daly, talks in Hillsborough early in 2010 leading up to the agreement there and the devolution of Justice powers to Stormont.
I also reported on the Funeral of Belfast’s snooker legend, Alex Higgins and spent a lot of time covering the tragic events around Michaela McAreavey’s murder in Mauritius in 2011.
In 2010 – I spent two days at the publication of the Saville Report into Bloody Sunday in Derry.
Admittedly – Welcoming home and interviewing Graeme McDowell in his home golf club, three days after the Portrush man became the first European to win that Major in 40 years has been one of the highest points of my career to date.
